A Visit from the Goon Squad

A Visit from the Goon Squad

By Jennifer Egan

I don’t know what happened, if it was the result of downloading so many books in one day that I got confused about which was which or if I saw the word ‘Goon’ and my brain immediately jumped to The Goonies.

Either way, I was reading this novel,- which revolves around characters who are linked through music, struggle, eccentricities, and growing older and all of the changes that entails- and kept waiting for a group of kids to go on some wild and crazy, yet wholesome and charming, coming-of-age adventure. Needless to say, I spent much of this reading experience completely confused.

Anyway, once I got over my Goonie obsession, I tried to focus on the story at hand.

This book was fine. Nothing amazing, nothing terrible.

Some of the sections were really interesting, others had to be waded through with persistence.

I enjoyed the unexpected ways in which the stories intertwined and how one person’s section offered clarity or answers about someone else’s.

I hate giving this sort of review but, honestly, this book left me with “meh.”

Read it if you want, or don’t, or just go watch The Goonies and smile.

  1. I love that you ended this review with sending me to off to watch The Goonies... which I love! (Who doesn't? A fool.)

  2. You are so wise. This book was a take-it-or-leave-it sorta book. The Goonies is 100% a take-it-and-love-it so much that you wish you were a Goonie too kinda movie. The choice seems clear.
